This beautifully camouflaged creature is the Bargibanti Pygmy Seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti). This one is pregnant which means it is a male. Like all seahorses, the males have the difficult task of carrying and birthing the babies. This species is so small and so well camouflaged that they were only discovered accidentally when a gorgonian coral was collected for research. They grow to an average size of .55- 1.06 inches, but are usually barely the size of your pinky-nail! Their perfect camouflage and size make them nearly impossible to find without a very well trained eye!⠀

***SEA LIFE SATURDAY***⠀
Photobombed!! Although this could easily have been photographed off the coast of California, this photo was taken in the Galápagos Islands last Christmas of a Galapagos Bullhead Shark (Heterodontus quoyi) and a female Galapagos sheephead wrasse (Semicossyphus darwini). Both of these species have close relatives living off of the California coast, the Horn Shark, and the California sheephead wrasse. Although there is little known about the Galapagos Bullhead Shark, this family of sharks (Heterodontidae) dates back to the Jurassic period! You can usually find them minding their own business on the sea floor during the day, when they rest. Just don’t startle them! They are said to be blind, and when startled you can see them bumping their heads into rocks as they try and swim away. ⠀
